Radnor House Sevenoaks Girls-U11A vs  U11 ISA Girls Hockey Finals
On: Tuesday, 14 Nov 2023
Venue: Away

Early morning on Tuesday, our U11 Girls hockey team travelled into London to the Lee Valley Hockey Centre, home of the 2012 Olympics. As we arrived at the stadium the girls were excited to play at the same site as their hockey heroes. Our day started in Group D with a game against a good Crossfields School side. The first game had the usual nerves and mistakes, but our girls grew into the game but couldn’t get the goal to break the deadlock, 0-0 draw. Next up we played Bedford Greenacre, after 3 minutes we raced into a 2-0 lead, with the first coming from a fantastic deflection from Sienna. A great start and the only thing that could stop us was the weather, a thunderstorm rolled in, and we went inside the stadium. The score was given 2-0. Last up we played Ipswich High School, knowing a win would give us a good chance of finishing in 1st place of the pool. Our performance level jumped up again and we played a very controlled game. We won 2-0 again with some fantastic attacking play from Rosie, Lauren & Millie. We finished in 1st place and moved onto the Cup competition.

During our break, we were lucky enough to have a visit from England and GB star, Holly Hunt. Holly has played in the world cup and scored the winning goal in the final of the Commonwealth games. She spent time talking to the players, getting pictures and signing sticks. A great experience for our girls.

In the cup we were placed in a group of 4 with the winner of the group playing in the final. First up we played Thorpe Hall, we continued our good performances from the pool stage to score some great goals. A highlight performance from Isabelle Parker as a dynamic attacker helped finish the game with a 4-0 win. We then played local rivals Lingfield College. Knowing this would be a tougher game our girls were very focused and played a complete game. They defended from front to back and moved the ball well to create lots of chances in front of goal. Another 2 goals scored, and none conceded gave us another win. Last up in the group was Chafham Grove. Both teams knew a win would put them into the final. Chafham started the strongest, with some good attacking drives into our defence. Unfortunately for Chafham our Radnor defence of Alysia and Charlie were rocks at the back. They stifled their attacks and then had the composure to make the right pass and set us off in attack. On the few occasions they made it past we had Lucy able to make some important saves in the game early on to keep us level. A penalty corner goal from Betsy and a great back post deflection from Millie won the game 2-0.

The final was played against Holme Grange and now under the floodlights of the pitch due to the delays of the thunderstorm. We had our own Radnor lighting on the pitch. A very even game with chances for both teams and some quality hockey on show. Betsy scored what I can only imagine as goal of the tournament, with a reverse stick strike from a narrow angle into the bottom corner. The team then fought off the nerves and attacks from Holme Grange to see out the win.
